The Normal Route is the most traveled way up Aconcagua. It follows the Horcones Valley to base camp at Plaza de Mulas, 4,300 meters (14,100 ft), then climbs through three camps to the summit at 6,961 meters (22,838 ft).

It’s a day shorter than our 360 and gains its height over fewer days, so it isn’t easier, just different. One practical difference: on the 360 everyone has to reach Camp III to complete the loop together. On the Normal Route, a climber who needs to stop can head down the way we came.

We run it on request for teams of at least three. If you’re putting a group together, or want to join one, write to us. For most climbers we recommend the 360.

Is this trip for you?

  • No mountaineering experience needed.
  • You've done multi-day backpacking trips and know how you handle a heavy pack.
  • You're very fit: six to eight hours with a heavy pack, then the same again the next day.
  • Time above 14,000 ft (4,300 m) helps a lot, but it isn't required.
  • You can be away for three weeks, and you have at least two friends to climb with, or are happy for us to build a team of three or more.

Not sure? Ask us. We'll tell you honestly whether it's the right next step, and what would get you ready.

Questions people ask

How is this different from the 360?

Same mountain, same summit, similar difficulty. The Normal Route approaches through the Horcones Valley to Plaza de Mulas and is a day shorter. The 360 takes the quieter Vacas Valley and loops the mountain, with an extra day for acclimatization. For most climbers we recommend the 360.

How fit do I need to be?

Very. Plan on six to eight hours a day with a heavy pack, at altitude, for days in a row.

How much will I carry?

About 20 pounds to base camp with mule support. Above base camp, 35 to 40 pounds on each carry and up to 65 coming down.

Should I take Diamox (acetazolamide)?

That's a decision for you and your doctor. Plenty of climbers summit without it. How well you acclimatize is mostly genetic, and the best predictor is how you've done at altitude before. If you've never been this high, Diamox can improve your odds, but it has side effects and takes a day or two to start working. If you'd rather learn what your body does on its own, skip it.
