Rope Team Rising came out of Lucy Westlake’s climbing. At 18 she became the youngest American woman to summit Everest, and as a teenager training for it she struggled to find courses that would take her seriously. In 2022 she partnered with AWE and the Summit Scholarship to build one for girls and young women, and the first course ran on Mount Baker in 2023.

The climbing matches our Mount Baker school: a hike to base camp, a full day of glacier skills, and a summit attempt by the Easton or Squak Glacier. The difference is logistics. The team meets in Seattle and lodging before and after the climb is included. We pick up climbers under 18 at the airport; climbers 18 and over meet us at the team hotel, about 15 minutes from SeaTac.

No experience needed. Climbers should be fit, comfortable hiking for hours, and ready to carry a heavy pack. Women guide the trip and the team is capped at nine.
